Over the last two years, several things related to core game mechanics have been requested fixed by the playerbase since closed beta. These things have, in combination, reduced the enjoyment of the game and caused players to seek greener pastures.
I'm going to be blunt, because I disagree with certain parties who believe "jesus features" like improved planetary conquest should somehow be more important than the baseline playability of the game.
The following complaints have been brought up and not even commented upon or acknowledged as a problem that I have seen.
1: Lag. Since the closing of the oceania server the lag in the game has gotten steadily worse. The amount of rubber banding, cornrr shot kills and general unplayability is often more common than playable matches.
Whatever is causing this problem should be made a priority regardless of whether it is network code, hardware or chat lag. This is a basic thing that affects everyone in the game.
2: Hit detection. The hit detection in DUST is spotty, unreliable and entirely too dependent upon aim assist as a fix. Part of it is related to lag, but not all of it. It is most notable if you play with m/kb or the aim assist off. You will have periods where it doesn't matter where uour reticle is, you aren't going to hit.
3. Controls. Since DUST changed from Chromosome to Uprising the controls in DUST have been sluggish, unresponsive and allow little precision. In any other game the controls have to be fully functional and senitive, and adjustable. I'm not talking about remapping buttons or keys, I'm talking about x, y and z axis controls.
This one is a particular peeve of mine because I've had a cpm member tell me it's not important enough to make a priority. Both the m/kb and dualshock controls are heinous.
4. Devs following up on promises or actions when they say they will. This one speaks for itself and has cropped up numerous times. Even a response of "this isn't feasible" is better than three months of silence.
5. Real matchmaking. One sided fights are only fun for the victor.
6. Rewards system. This is only considered ok by people who are chosen by their PC corps as ringers and are able to continuously enjoy PC EoM payouts.
The combination of the above has had more to do with people leaving and badmouthing DUST more than any other factor in the game.
Three of the listed factors would represent immediate quality of life improvements in PC and FW.
These are the reasons most cited why friends of mine IRL eefuse to play this game again. These are the most common reasons I see derided.
People don't quit snd hate on a game because it lacks jesus features. They do it when the game is considered unplayable by modern gaming industry standards, even among F2P and freemium games.

If they were I'll edit that out.

CommanderBolt wrote:You mention lag and hit detection, as well as clunky controls or words to that effect. Both are solid points that seem key but I am surprised that you have not mentioned game performance and optimisations, as they too are some of the biggest problems people talk about.
those three things are the primary issue as far as game performance and optimization goes. the lag affects framerate, the hit detection is affected by framerate and lag, and the controls restrict the player's ability to compensate for these handicaps by being better than his opponent.
when people talk about performance and optimization, when you read their posts you see "crappy controls" or "lousy hit detection" or "poor FPS" or "insurmountable lag."
The frames per second are heavily affected by lag.

Is the current CCP Dust crew even able to fix the quality of life stuff ? It seems to me they just want to add features and post lvl content to continue to bring in Aurum sales before end of life... Vague answer: Almost everything can be fixed, but the team can't address everything at once.
Specific answer: Nothing matters if the core gameplay isn't good.

I'm curious to see if anyone cares to try and refute this.

OP updated.
Point 6: Rewards is no longer valid based on points made for salvage and warbarge effects upon rewards.

Csikszent Mihalyi wrote:This has long been resolved conclusively. The root cause of all the control issues is low framerates. Low framerates in DUST are not caused by network lag (which is almost impossible, and not something Unreal Engine is known for), nor by CCP being entirely incompetent, but by Unreal Engine running extremely poorly on the unique PS3 architecture.
To fix this, aside from drastically reducing world detail (which is unlikely to happen), a major rework of Unreal Engine would be required, and considering that PS3 is near the end of its life cycle and that this work would be completely useless for any other platform, we can safely assume that CCP will never make this significant investment.
In other words no, DUST will never run significantly better on the PS3 than it does today. It's useless to press CCP for answers because they can't give any. They (and us) can only make the best of DUST on PS3 while it lasts, and look forward to a better future on another platform (read: PC). doesnt wash.
it ran significantly better in the past
